We understand that losing your vehicle keys or never having them can be a frustrating obstacle when trying to donate your vehicle. Whether the keys are lost, damaged, or with an ex-spouse, rest assured that you can still make your donation through Indy Car Connect.
The good news is that we do not require the keys for vehicle donations—we'll arrange for flatbed towing to pick up your vehicle, regardless of its key situation. In most cases, you can simply provide the vehicle title, VIN, and ensure there's access for the tow truck, and we’ll take care of the rest!
How to make it happen
Check Your Title
Ensure the vehicle title is in your name and that it's free of liens. This is crucial as the title is your proof of ownership, which we need to process the donation.
Provide VIN
Locate your vehicle's VIN, typically found on the driver's side dashboard or door frame. This number will help us identify your vehicle and assist with any necessary arrangements.
Clear a Path for Towing
Make sure there’s a clear and accessible route for the flatbed tow truck to reach your vehicle. This is essential for a smooth pick-up process, especially if the vehicle is off the road.
Consider Duplicate Keys
If possible, consider ordering a duplicate key from your dealer using the VIN and title proof. This can help if your vehicle has an immobilizer or requires programming.
Schedule Your Pickup
Contact Indy Car Connect to schedule a towing date. We’ll guide you through the rest of the donation process and make it as easy as possible!
Common gotchas
Title Not in Your Name
Tip: If the vehicle title is not in your name, the donation cannot proceed. It’s important to ensure the title is transferred to you first.
Not Considering Tow Access
Tip: Donors often forget to clear access for the tow truck. Double-check the route beforehand to avoid delays during pick-up.
Duplicate Key Delay
Tip: Ordering a duplicate key can take time. If your vehicle has an immobilizer chip, ensure you factor this into your planning with the donor.
Understanding State Regulations
Tip: Different states have different regulations regarding vehicle donations without keys. Be informed about Indiana’s specific requirements to ensure a smooth process.
If this path doesn't fit
If donating your vehicle without keys isn't feasible due to title issues or other complications, consider selling the vehicle privately if it has value. Alternatively, some dealerships may offer trade-in options even without keys. For vehicles that are not operable, you could look into junk car services that won't require keys for sale.
Indianapolis DMV specifics
In Indiana, when donating a vehicle, make sure to handle any necessary paperwork at the DMV. You'll need to ensure the title is properly signed over to the charity. Also, check for any lien releases if applicable. Remember to surrender your license plate and obtain confirmation for your records, as Indiana law requires this step for vehicle donations.
