If your car’s registration has expired in Indianapolis, you almost certainly do NOT need to renew it before donating. With Indy Car Connect, what matters is that you have a valid Indiana title in your name – not current plates or tags. Whether your car is sitting in Broad Ripple, Speedway, Lawrence, Southport, or out in Avon or Fishers, you can still donate it, even if you haven’t paid registration in years.
Here’s how it works in Indiana: you sign your Indiana title over to our charity partner, Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Once the title is transferred, the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility – not yours. We arrange a free tow anywhere in the Indy Metro, even if the car won’t start or can’t be driven because the tags are expired. You don’t pay back registration fees to donate. After pickup, you notify the BMV of the transfer so you’re off the hook for future taxes, tickets, or liability. Then we send you a tax receipt you can use when you file, typically at least $500; over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have the Indiana title in your name
Don’t worry about your expired plate or unpaid registration. For donation in the Indy Metro, the critical piece is an Indiana title in your name with no major errors or open liens. Grab the title from your files or glovebox. If it’s lost, you can request a duplicate from the Indiana BMV before scheduling pickup.
2. Tell us about your car and expired registration
Call or submit our quick online form and let us know the make, model, approximate mileage, and that the registration is expired. Whether your car is parked in Fountain Square, Castleton, Carmel, or Greenwood, we’ll let you know right away if it’s eligible. In most normal cases, expired tags are no issue at all.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in the Indy Metro
You don’t need to drive the car or renew the plates. Our towing partner comes to you at a time that works, whether the vehicle is at your home, office, or a shop in places like Irvington, Beech Grove, or Plainfield. Pickup is always free for you and can usually be scheduled within a few days.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them)
At pickup, you’ll sign your Indiana title over to Heritage for the Blind following the exact instructions we provide. If you’ve removed the plates already, that’s fine. The tow driver takes the car, keys if available, and the signed title. From that point, the vehicle is the charity’s responsibility, not yours.
5. Notify the Indiana BMV of the transfer
After your car is picked up, you should notify the Indiana BMV that you donated the vehicle. This step helps protect you from future taxes, tickets, or tolls tied to that VIN. We’ll explain precisely what information you’ll need so you can complete this in just a few minutes online or in person.
6. Receive your tax receipt and feel good about your impact
Once the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a tax receipt you can use at tax time. Typically, you can claim at least a $500 deduction, and donations over $500 use IRS Form 1098‑C. Your problem car with expired registration becomes funding for services supporting people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
The name on the title doesn’t match who’s donating
Tip: If the title is in a previous owner’s name, a relative’s name, or a business name, we may need an extra signature, estate paperwork, or supporting documents. Before scheduling your tow in Indianapolis, send us a clear photo of the title so we can walk you through exactly what’s required to transfer it cleanly.
There’s an active loan or lien listed on the title
Tip: If a bank or finance company is still listed on your Indiana title, the lien must be released before donation. Often this means getting a lien release letter or updated title from the lender or BMV. Check the front of your title; if you see a lienholder, contact them first or ask us what proof you’ll need to provide.
The title is lost, badly damaged, or never transferred
Tip: We can’t donate a vehicle in Indiana without a valid title. If it’s missing or illegible, you’ll need a duplicate from the BMV. If you bought the car but never put it in your name, you must complete that step first. We’ll tell you which BMV form to request so you don’t waste time or make a needless trip.
Serious parking tickets or tolls attached to the car
Tip: Expired registration sometimes comes with unpaid tickets. While you don’t need to clear every fee to donate, certain holds might affect title transfer. If you know there are towing, storage, or ticket issues, mention them up front. We’ll help you understand what must be resolved and what doesn’t affect your ability to donate.
